The Best Smartphone Camera of 2019, So Far…

Staff Writer / 23-08-2019 / News

The camera has become a major deciding factor for many consumers when choosing a smartphone. With advancing technology, the world’s leading manufacturers like Apple, Samsung and Huawei are creating near pro-level cameras for their phones in the race to be the best.

The biggest selling smartphone brands are undoubtedly Apple, Huawei and Samsung, and all three have flagship smartphones in the local market. The Apple iPhone XS Max, Samsung Galaxy S10+ and Huawei P30 Pro have all graced the headlines for 2019 as the top smartphone must-haves, each featuring powerful camera technologies, but which one is truly the best?

Apple iPhone XS Max

The first of the trio is the Apple iPhone XS Max that has sparked awe in the eyes of Apple fans. Offering the best camera from the US-based company so far, the XS Max features a twin camera module with a 12 MP wide-angle lens and 12 MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom.

For video, the XS Max can record up to 2160p@24/30/60fps and 1080p@30/60/120/240fps, while offering High Dynamic Range (HDR) and stereo sound recording.

Although it is one of the most highly priced smartphones ever launched, similar camera technology as featured on the XS Max can be found in a few other, more affordable smartphones. Despite this, the XS Max still captures great images and has the rest of the bells and whistles of the iPhone to be an attractive device.

Samsung Galaxy S10+

The highly anticipated series from the South Korean manufacturers have had the smartphone industry abuzz with the high-quality S10 series.

The S10+ earns its stripes as formidable competition in the smartphone camera industry with the introduction of the manufacturers’ advanced triple camera setup. The S10+ features a 12 MP wide-angle lens, 16 MP ultra-wide lens and a 16 MP telephoto lens, offering 2x optical zoom.

The S10+ captures stunning imagery and trumps the iPhone XS Max with the introduction of a third lens for ultra-wide-angle imagery, allowing for more detail to be captured in a photo.

Huawei P30 Pro

The flagship smartphone from the popular Chinese manufacturer caused a stir in the smartphone camera industry, scooping scores of awards and accolades.

The P30 Pro features a quad camera module consisting of a 40 MP wide-angle lens, 20 MP ultra-wide lens, 8MP Periscope lens capable of 5x optical zoom, and a Time of Flight (TOF) 3D camera – which essentially allows the camera to measure distances.

Not only does the device sport the most cameras among the top three manufacturers, it’s also backed by German optics company, Leica. The P30 Pro reigns supreme as the best camera smartphone available on the market today.

Verdict

While a spec-for-spec comparison still places the Huawei P30 Pro above the rest, camera testing across all three devices by numerous international testing bodies still ended up with the same result.

DxOMark , the leading body of independent image quality testing and rating for smartphones, cameras and lenses also places the Huawei P30 Pro as the front runner. The Huawei P30 Pro racks up a total of 112 points while the Samsung Galaxy S10+ smartphone scores 109 and the Apple XS Max takes home 105 points.

Can You Get a Phone Contract with Bad Credit?

Have you ever applied for a cell phone contract and were turned down because you have a low credit score? The mobile networks in South Africa have become more stringent when deciding who to approve or decline for mo bile contracts, so if you have a poor credit score or have been “blacklisted”, chances are you may not qualify for most mobile contracts. In 2015, a whopping 80% of cell phone applications were declined by the major SA networks due to low credit scores. Put simply, only two out of ten people were successful in applying for a mobile contract, even though they may have had a job or even paid their bills on time. Each network has their own credit score cards with requirements that need to be met before being approved for a cell phone contract. The good news, however, is that people with bad credit have options available to them, depending on their individual credit scores. For example, you may apply for a Samsung S10 deal but, due to your score, you may only qualify for a deal bundled with a Samsung A10 smartphone or even a SIM-only deal , that gives you the benefits of a contract without the subsidised handset or router. Mondo carries a wide range of mobile deals from Telkom, Vodacom and MTN to give customers more choice and a better chance at qualifying for a cellular deal. If your application is declined, the other option you have is to obtain your credit score from local credit bureaus such as Trans Union ITC and Experian. Thereafter, you need to work on improving your credit score and profile. Make sure you pay all credit instalments that are due at the end of the month, in full and on time. If you can’t make your minimum monthly repayment, ensure you contact the company you owe money to and arrange a more affordable payment plan to keep you from being blacklisted. If there are no judgements against your name and you have a decent credit record with banks or businesses such as clothing stores, you have a good chance of being approved for your next mobile contract. How to Improve Your Credit Scores & Get a Mobile Contract

Before approving or declining your application for credit, credit providers will study your credit score to measure the risk in taking you on as a client. When mobile networks offer cell phone contracts, only consumers who have a good credit standing and are able to afford the monthly payment for the duration of the contract are considered. Your credit score is calculated by a credit bureau, and while it is based on your credit report, it also takes into account how you pay your bills, how much debt you have and, most importantly, how you compare to other active credit consumers. Your credit score is not an endorsement or a criticism of you or your credit behaviour, nor does it determine whether or not you qualify for credit. Those factors depend on the credit provider’s own credit-approval criteria. Here are some ways you can boost your credit score: Look at your credit report and identify which accounts you’re not up to date with. Ensure that you make the full instalments on the due date, every single month. Make sure that you’re paying other contract-based clients, such as DSTV, the gym or short-term insurance, on time. You need to prove that you are able to service other contract-based creditors. Try to keep your current credit facilities to less than 35% of your limit. For example, if you have a credit card or a store account with a limit of R1 000, try to maintain the amount owing balance at under R350. Regularly check your credit report for any negative information against your name (judgements or court orders) and take active steps to pay all your outstanding debts in full so or arrange to make smaller but manageable payments. Maintain a good mix of credit – store accounts, credit cards, home loans, cell phone accounts – to help you establish a strong credit history. Try not to apply for too much for credit in a short space of time. Too many simultaneous applications could indicate that there has been a significant change in your financial circumstances and could negatively impact your credit profile. Finally, check your credit report, and your credit score, regularly. There are many options to access your credit report for free. Need more credit advice?
