Top 5 Tips to Reduce Data Usage on iOS and Android

It isn’t a nice feeling when you get a notification saying you’ve used up your mobile data for the month. It’s even worse when you receive a surprise bill for out-of-bundle data usage because you forgot to set a limit. Either way, it’s frustrating and costly. The good news is that these situations are totally avoidable if you follow our 5 simple tips to slash your data usage.

Switch to Wi-Fi:

Whenever possible, connect to free Wi-Fi hotspots at malls, restaurants and even at your workplace. If these are places you visit frequently, all you have to do is enter the login and password details once and your mobile device will automatically connect whenever you’re in range. Just be cautious when using public Wi-Fi hotspots – these connections may not be secure, so avoid tasks such as online banking.

Background App Data

Go to the Settings menu on your smartphone to see which apps have access to data. You can manually turn off the unnecessary apps.

On an iPhone, open Settings > Mobile Data to see the apps you’ve allowed to use data and to toggle them off accordingly.

On Android, open Settings > Data Usage > Open each app you’d like to turn off and select Restrict app background data.

Watch and Listen Offline

Music streaming services such as Google Play Music and video-on-demand services like Netflix feature offline modes, which help you save enormous amounts of data while you binge-on-the-go. Just download your favourite music playlists, movies, and TV shows to your device when you’re connected to a free Wi-Fi hotspot to preserve your mobile data.

Use a Data Monitoring App

If you just can’t stay on top of your data usage, get an app that’ll do it for you. Two of the most popular data monitoring apps for both Android and iOS are Traffic Monitor and My Data Manager. These apps keep track of your usage and even allow you to set custom alerts when you exceed a certain amount of data.

Restrict Auto-Download of Media on WhatsApp

WhatsApp is one of the most popular instant messaging apps in the world, but it’s also one of the biggest culprits when it comes to unnecessary data usage.  By default, WhatsApp is set to automatically download every photo, video, audio clip and document attached to messages. The good news is that you can change this setting so that these files will only be downloaded when you’re connected to Wi-Fi.

In WhatsApp, go to Settings > Data and Storage Usage where you’ll find a section for Media Auto-Download. Select Wi-Fi instead of the default Wi-Fi and Cellular for each option.

Have you ever applied for a cell phone contract and were turned down because you have a low credit score? The mobile networks in South Africa have become more stringent when deciding who to approve or decline for mo bile contracts, so if you have a poor credit score or have been “blacklisted”, chances are you may not qualify for most mobile contracts. In 2015, a whopping 80% of cell phone applications were declined by the major SA networks due to low credit scores. Put simply, only two out of ten people were successful in applying for a mobile contract, even though they may have had a job or even paid their bills on time. Each network has their own credit score cards with requirements that need to be met before being approved for a cell phone contract. The good news, however, is that people with bad credit have options available to them, depending on their individual credit scores. For example, you may apply for a Samsung S10 deal but, due to your score, you may only qualify for a deal bundled with a Samsung A10 smartphone or even a SIM-only deal , that gives you the benefits of a contract without the subsidised handset or router. How to Improve Your Credit Scores & Get a Mobile Contract

Before approving or declining your application for credit, credit providers will study your credit score to measure the risk in taking you on as a client. When mobile networks offer cell phone contracts, only consumers who have a good credit standing and are able to afford the monthly payment for the duration of the contract are considered. Your credit score is calculated by a credit bureau, and while it is based on your credit report, it also takes into account how you pay your bills, how much debt you have and, most importantly, how you compare to other active credit consumers. Your credit score is not an endorsement or a criticism of you or your credit behaviour, nor does it determine whether or not you qualify for credit. Those factors depend on the credit provider’s own credit-approval criteria. Here are some ways you can boost your credit score: Look at your credit report and identify which accounts you’re not up to date with. Ensure that you make the full instalments on the due date, every single month. Make sure that you’re paying other contract-based clients, such as DSTV, the gym or short-term insurance, on time. You need to prove that you are able to service other contract-based creditors. Try to keep your current credit facilities to less than 35% of your limit. For example, if you have a credit card or a store account with a limit of R1 000, try to maintain the amount owing balance at under R350. Regularly check your credit report for any negative information against your name (judgements or court orders) and take active steps to pay all your outstanding debts in full so or arrange to make smaller but manageable payments. Maintain a good mix of credit – store accounts, credit cards, home loans, cell phone accounts – to help you establish a strong credit history. Try not to apply for too much for credit in a short space of time. Too many simultaneous applications could indicate that there has been a significant change in your financial circumstances and could negatively impact your credit profile.
